Local Boston Startups at Mass Innovation Nights Mass Innovation Nights is a monthly product launch party for local Boston entrepreneurs. Each one is held in a different place, with this one (#MIN87) being at Bullhorns new headquarters on the 17th floor of 100 Summer Street, one of the many tall buildings in Boston with its own Wikipedia page. Fun Fact, 100 Summer Street is shown on the TV show Arrow as the company headquarters for the billionaire superhero Green Arrow/Oliver Queen. Source: Imgur Every time I go to one of these events, I get excited. Every time, I think about how far Ive gone to be able to network with businessmen, entrepreneurs, and investors. Even the physical ride up the elevator makes me think about how Im rising through the startup scene and meeting more and more influential people. The center of the room was for networking, while the startups had tables lining up the sides. After I gorged on the cheese and crackers (this broke college student has been on a steady diet of chicken breast, ramen, and whatever free foods they serve at networking events), I made my way around the tables. In the Student Startup Spotlight were entrepreneurs from Bentley University, working on interesting concepts like Indian groceries delivery (Desi Cart) and an Uber for haircuts (MyBarber). My favorite startup of the night though was CharityCheckin. If you check into a participating retailer through their app, that retailer will donate money to a charity of your choice and CharityCheckin thanks them for their donation on your Facebook profile. For the user, it increases brand loyalty because you like how they donated money to your charity. For the business, it increases exposure because their donation on your behalf is shared to your Facebook profile. The Golden Lily Chapter 22 Free Essays
string(63) " side of the building at last and peered out a bedroom window\." SHOTS RANG OUT across the arena, taking down several more armed Warriors. I realized that Dimitri and Eddie werenââ¬â¢t alone ââ¬â because neither was holding a gun. The shots were coming from the roofs of the compound buildings that surrounded the arena. We will write a custom essay sample on The Golden Lily Chapter 22 or any similar topic only for you Order Now Chaos broke out as the gathered spectators jumped to their feet to join in the fray. My breath caught as I realized that many of them had their own weapons too. I was shocked to notice that the fallen Warrior on the ground next to me wasnââ¬â¢t bleeding. A small dart hung from his shoulder. The sharpshootersââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"bulletsâ⬠must have been tranquilizers. Who were they? I looked back toward the entrance and saw that a few others with the look of guardians had entered the arena and were fighting with some of the Warriors, including Chris. This provided cover for Dimitri and Eddie to free Sonya. A flash of strawberry blonde hair caught my eye near them, and I recognized Angelineââ¬â¢s lithe figure. Dimitri efficiently cut Sonyaââ¬â¢s straps then helped lift her toward Eddie. A zealous Warrior came at them, and Angeline quickly knocked him out ââ¬â as though he were a motivational speaker. Beside me, one of the masters shouted, ââ¬Å"Get the Alchemist girl! Hold her hostage! Theyââ¬â¢ll negotiate for her!â⬠The Alchemist girl. Right. That would be me. In the roar of fighting, hardly anyone heard him ââ¬â save one. The bleach blonde girl had managed to evade being tranquilized. She leapt toward me. My adrenaline kicked in, and I was suddenly no longer afraid. With reflexes I didnââ¬â¢t know I had, I reached into my purse and pulled out the so-called ââ¬Å"potpourri.â⬠I ripped it open and flung it out around me, shouting a Latin incantation that translated roughly to ââ¬Å"see no more.â⬠Compared to the scrying spell, this one was astonishingly easy. It required will on my part, certainly, but most of the magic was tied into the physical components and didnââ¬â¢t need the hours of concentration that the other one had. The power surged through me almost instantly, filling me with a thrill I hadnââ¬â¢t expected. The girl screamed and dropped her gun, clawing at her eyes. Cries of dismay from the masters sitting by me showed they too had been affected. Iââ¬â¢d cast a blindness spell, one that would affect those near me for about thirty seconds. Some part of me knew that wielding magic was wrong, but the rest of me felt triumphant at stopping some of these trigger-happy fanatics, if only temporarily. I didnââ¬â¢t waste any of that precious time. I jumped up from where I was sitting and ran across the arena, away from the fighting near the entrance. ââ¬Å"Sydney!â⬠I donââ¬â¢t know how I managed to hear my name above all that noise. Glancing behind me, I saw Eddie and Angeline carrying Sonya out through the door. They paused, and a pained look crossed Eddieââ¬â¢s face as he glanced around, assessing the situation. I could guess his thoughts. He wanted me to come with them. Most of the gathered Warriors had raced to the center of the arena, trying to stop Sonyaââ¬â¢s rescue. They outmatched me by a long shot, creating a wall between my friends and me. Even if I didnââ¬â¢t have to actually fight anyone, it seemed impossible Iââ¬â¢d slip by unnoticed ââ¬â especially since several people were still shouting about ââ¬Å"that Alchemist girl.â⬠Shaking my head adamantly, I motioned for Eddie to go on without me. Indecision warred on his face, and I hoped he wouldnââ¬â¢t attempt to break through the throng to get to me. I pointed at the door, again urging him to go. Sonya was the incapacitated one. I would find my own way out. Not waiting to see what heââ¬â¢d do, I turned and continued the way Iââ¬â¢d been going. There was a lot of open space for me to cover, but fewer Warriors to stop me. Several buildings ringed the arena, some with doors and windows. I moved toward them, though I had nothing to break the glass. Two of the doors had padlocks. That left two without. The first one I tried turned out to have some unseen lock and wouldnââ¬â¢t open. Frantic, I ran to the second and heard a shout behind me. The bleach blonde girl had regained her sight and was coming after me. Desperately, I turned the doorknob. Nothing happened. Reaching into my purse, I pulled out what the Warriors had mistaken for hand sanitizer. I dumped it out, spilling acid over the metal knob. It melted before my eyes. I hoped that would kill the lock. I threw my shoulder into the door, and it gave. Then I dared a peek behind me. My pursuer was lying on the ground, another victim of the tranquilizers. I breathed a sigh of relief and pushed through the door. Iââ¬â¢d expected to enter another garage like the one Iââ¬â¢d first been taken to, but instead I found myself in some sort of residential building. The empty hallways turned this way and that, and I felt disoriented. Everyone was at the free-for-all in the arena. I passed makeshift bedrooms, filled with cots and partially unpacked suitcases and backpacks. When I noticed what looked like an office, I hesitated in the doorway. Papers covered large foldout tables inside, and I wondered if any contained useful information about the Warriors. I wanted so badly to go in and investigate. These Warriors were a mystery to the Alchemists. Who knew what intel these papers contained? What if there was information that could protect the Moroi? I hesitated for the space of a few heartbeats then reluctantly kept going. The guardians were using tranquilizers, but the Warriors had real guns ââ¬â guns they wouldnââ¬â¢t be afraid to use on me. Better to get out of here with the information I already had than not get out alive. I reached the far side of the building at last and peered out a bedroom window. You read "The Golden Lily Chapter 22" in category "Essay examples" It was so dark outside now that I could hardly see anything. I didnââ¬â¢t have the benefit of torches anymore. The only thing I could tell for sure was that I was no longer adjacent to the arena. That was good enough for me, though it wouldââ¬â¢ve been better if there was a door leading outside. Iââ¬â¢d have to make my own. Grabbing a chair, I swung it into the window and was completely astonished when the glass broke easily. A few shards hit me, but nothing large enough to cause injury. Standing on the chair, I managed to climb out the window without injuring my hands. I was met by a warm, dark night. No electric lights were visible ahead, just open black land. I took this to mean I was on the opposite side of the compound where Trey had brought me. There were no roads, no sound from the highway we had traveled. There was also no sign of life anywhere, which I took as a good sign. Hopefully all the Warrior guards who normally paroled the grounds were off fighting guardians. If Sonya was out now, my hope was that the guardians would begin retreating ââ¬â and grab me along the way. Even if they didnââ¬â¢t, I wasnââ¬â¢t above walking back to I-10 and hitchhiking. The compound was sprawling and confusing, and as I walked around it and still saw no sign of the highway, I began to grow uneasy. How turned around had I gotten? I only had a limited amount of time to get off Warrior property. They could be hunting me right now. There was also the disconcerting problem that once I made it to the periphery, Iââ¬â¢d have to deal with the electric fence. Still, it might be best to forget looking for the freeway and simply make for the edge of the Warriorsââ¬â¢ camp so that I could ââ¬â A hand grabbed my shoulder, and I screamed. ââ¬Å"Easy there, Sage. Iââ¬â¢m no gun-toting crazy guy. Crazy, yes. But not the rest.â⬠I stared in disbelief, not that I could really make out much of the tall, dark figure standing over me. ââ¬Å"Adrian?â⬠The height was right, as was the build. As I stared, I became more and more certain. His hands steadied my shaking. I was so glad to see a friendly face ââ¬â to see him ââ¬â that I nearly sank into his arms in relief. ââ¬Å"It is you. Howââ¬â¢d you find me?â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re the only human out here with a yellow and purple aura,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Makes you easy to spot.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, I mean, howââ¬â¢d you find me here? At the compound?â⬠ââ¬Å"I followed the others. They told me not to, butâ⬠¦ well.â⬠In the faint moonlight I could barely see his shrug. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t follow directions well. When Castile came out with Sonya and started babbling about how youââ¬â¢d gone out some random door, I thought Iââ¬â¢d take a quick walk around. I donââ¬â¢t think I was supposed to do that either, but the guardians were kind of busy.â⬠ââ¬Å"You are crazy,â⬠I snapped, despite how happy I was to know I hadnââ¬â¢t been abandoned in this miserable place. ââ¬Å"The Warriors are so mad that theyââ¬â¢d probably kill a Moroi on sight if they saw you.â⬠He tugged my hand forward. Even through his banter, thereââ¬â¢d been a hard tone to his words. He was fully aware of the danger we faced. ââ¬Å"Then weââ¬â¢d better get out of here.â⬠Adrian led me back in the direction Iââ¬â¢d come, then went around the opposite side of the building. I didnââ¬â¢t see the freeway lights yet, but he soon turned and began running toward the propertyââ¬â¢s far edge, away from the building. I ran alongside him, still holding his hand. ââ¬Å"Where are we going?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"The guardians assembled near the back side of the compound, so they wouldnââ¬â¢t be spotted. That part of the fence has been deactivated ââ¬â if you can climb it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course I can climb it. Iââ¬â¢m practically a prodigy in PE,â⬠I pointed out. ââ¬Å"The question is, can you, Mr. Smoker?â⬠The fence began to come into focus as we approached, mostly because its shape blocked some of the stars. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the section. Behind the scraggly bush,â⬠Adrian said. I couldnââ¬â¢t see any bush but trusted in his eyes. ââ¬Å"Go a little ways past that, and thereââ¬â¢s this country highway that the guardians used as a staging point. Iââ¬â¢m parked there.â⬠We came to a halt in front of the fence, both of us a little breathless. I peered upward. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re sure itââ¬â¢s still off?â⬠ââ¬Å"It was when we came in,â⬠said Adrian, but I could hear a little uncertainty in his voice. ââ¬Å"You think those guys would have gotten their act together enough to fix it already?â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠I admitted. ââ¬Å"But Iââ¬â¢d still like to know for sure. I mean, most commercial electric fences wonââ¬â¢t significantly hurt someone, but we should know.â⬠He glanced around. ââ¬Å"Can we throw a stick at it?â⬠ââ¬Å"Wood doesnââ¬â¢t conduct.â⬠I rifled through my purse and found what I wanted: a metal pen with a foam grip. ââ¬Å"Hopefully, the foam on this will block the worst of it if the fence really is hot.â⬠Trying not to grimace, I reached out and touched the penââ¬â¢s barrel to the fence, half-expecting some intense charge to send me flying backward. Nothing happened. I slowly ran the pen along the fence, since most electric ones had an intermittent pulse. Sustained contact would be needed. ââ¬Å"Looks clean,â⬠I said, exhaling in relief and turning to Adrian. ââ¬Å"I guess weââ¬â¢re good to ââ¬â ahh!â⬠A bright light shone in my eyes, blinding me and killing whatever night vision Iââ¬â¢d gained out here. I heard Adrian cry out in surprise as well. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s the girl!â⬠a male voice exclaimed. ââ¬Å"Andâ⬠¦ and one of them!â⬠The flashlight was moved out of my face, and although spots still danced in my vision, I could make out two hulking figures rapidly approaching. Were they armed? My mind raced. Whether they were or not, they were still an obvious threat since Warriors apparently liked to practice bashing each other in their free time, and Adrian and I didnââ¬â¢t. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t move,â⬠said one of them. A blade shone in the gleam of the lowered flashlight. Not as bad as a gun, but not great either. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re both coming with us, back inside.â⬠ââ¬Å"Slowly,â⬠added the other. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t try any tricks.â⬠Unfortunately for them, I still had a few up my sleeve. Quickly I put the pen back in my purse and grabbed another souvenir from Ms. Terwilligerââ¬â¢s homework: a thin, round wooden bracelet. Before either Warrior could do anything, I snapped the wooden circle into four pieces and tossed them on the ground, calling out another Latin incantation. Again, I felt the rush of power and its exultation. The men cried out ââ¬â Iââ¬â¢d cast a disorientation spell, one that messed with equilibrium and made vision blurry and surreal. It worked a lot like the blindness spell, affecting those around me. I lunged forward and pushed one of our assailants down. He fell easily, too incapacitated by the spell to resist. The other guy was so distraught that heââ¬â¢d dropped the flashlight and was practically on the ground already as his attempts at balance failed. Nonetheless, I gave him a good kick to the chest to make sure he stayed down and grabbed his flashlight in the process. I didnââ¬â¢t necessarily need it with Adrianââ¬â¢s night vision, but these two would now be helpless in the dark when the spell wore off. ââ¬Å"Sage! What the hell did you do to me?â⬠Turning, I saw Adrian clinging to the fence, using it to hold himself up. In my eagerness to stop the Warriors, Iââ¬â¢d forgotten the spell affected everyone near me. ââ¬Å"Oh,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Sorry.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sorry? My legs donââ¬â¢t work!â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s your inner ear, actually. Come on. Grab the fence and climb. One hand in front of the other.â⬠I caught hold as well and urged him up. It wasnââ¬â¢t the most difficult fence to climb ââ¬â it wasnââ¬â¢t electrified or barbed ââ¬â and having it for support negated some of Adrianââ¬â¢s disorientation. Nonetheless, it was still slow going as we made it toward the top. This spell lasted a little longer than the blindness one, but I was painfully aware that as soon as Adrian was free from it, the Warriors would be too. Against all odds, we made it to the top of the fence. Getting over to the other side was much more difficult, and I had to do a fair amount of acrobatics to help Adrian make the transition while keeping myself steady. Finally, I wrangled him into the correct position to climb down. ââ¬Å"Good,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Now just reverse what you did before, one hand down in front of the ââ¬â â⬠Something slipped, either his hand or foot, and Adrian plummeted to the ground. It wasnââ¬â¢t that long of a drop, and his height helped a little ââ¬â not that he was in any shape to actually use his legs and land on his feet. I winced. ââ¬Å"Or you can just take the short way down,â⬠I said. I quickly scaled down after him and helped him stand. Aside from the spellââ¬â¢s debilitation, he didnââ¬â¢t seem to have suffered any damage. Slipping an arm around him and letting him lean his weight on me, I attempted to run toward the road heââ¬â¢d mentioned, which was now slightly visible. ââ¬Å"Runningâ⬠was difficult, however. It was hard work keeping Adrian up and I kept stumbling. Still, we made our way slowly from the compound, which was about as much as we could hope for. Adrianââ¬â¢s state made him clumsy and heavy, and his height was a real inconvenience. Then, without warning, the spell wore off, and Adrian instantly recovered. His legs strengthened and his unwieldy gait straightened out. Suddenly, it was as though he were carrying me, and we practically tripped over each other trying to adjust. ââ¬Å"You okay?â⬠I asked, letting go. ââ¬Å"I am now. What the hell was that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not important. What is important is that those guys have recovered too. Maybe I knocked them down hard enough to slow them down.â⬠That seemed kind of unlikely. ââ¬Å"But run anyway.â⬠We ran, and even if he undoubtedly had the respiratory system of a chain smoker, his long legs made up for it. He could easily outdistance me but slowed so that we stayed together. Whenever he started to get ahead, heââ¬â¢d grab my hand again. Shouts sounded behind us, and I turned off the flashlight to make us harder to spot. ââ¬Å"There,â⬠said Adrian. ââ¬Å"See the cars?â⬠Slowly, out of the darkness, two SUVs materialized, along with a much more conspicuous yellow Mustang. ââ¬Å"Very covert,â⬠I muttered. ââ¬Å"Most of the guardians have gotten away,â⬠said Adrian. ââ¬Å"But not everyone.â⬠Before I could respond, someone grabbed me from behind. In a maneuver that would have made Wolfe proud, I managed the backward kick that heââ¬â¢d tried so hard to teach us. It caught my attacker by surprise, and he released me, only for his companion to shove me to the ground. Three figures ran toward us from the cars and hurled themselves at our attackers. Thanks to his signature duster, I knew Dimitri led the group. ââ¬Å"Get out of here,â⬠he called to Adrian and me. ââ¬Å"You know where to meet. Weââ¬â¢ll cover you. Drive fast ââ¬â theyââ¬â¢ll probably be on the road soon.â⬠Adrian helped me up, and once again we ran together. Iââ¬â¢d hurt my ankle in the fall, so I moved slowly, but Adrian helped me along and let me lean on him. All the while, my heart was threatening to pound out of my chest, even when we reached the safety of the Mustang. He guided me to the passenger side. ââ¬Å"Can you get in okay?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m fine,â⬠I said, sliding in and unwilling to admit the pain was growing. I prayed I hadnââ¬â¢t slowed us too much. I couldnââ¬â¢t stand the thought of being the one responsible for Adrianââ¬â¢s capture. Satisfied, Adrian raced over to the driverââ¬â¢s side and started the car. The engine roared to life, and he followed Dimitriââ¬â¢s orders to the letter, peeling out at a speed I was envious of. Out on this country highway, however, it seemed unlikely there were any cops. I glanced behind us a few times, but by the time we made it to I-10, it was obvious no one had followed us. I sighed gratefully and leaned my head against the seat, though I was still a long way from being calm. I couldnââ¬â¢t assume we were safe yet. ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"How on earth did you guys find me?â⬠Adrian didnââ¬â¢t answer right away. When he did, I could tell it was with great reluctance. ââ¬Å"Eddie put a tracking device in your purse, back at my place.â⬠ââ¬Å"What? He couldnââ¬â¢t have! They searched me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, Iââ¬â¢m sure it didnââ¬â¢t look like one. I donââ¬â¢t know what he ended up getting. He got it from your people, actually. As soon as Trey confirmed the meeting tonight, Belikov was on the phone with every guardian in a two-hour radius, trying to recruit backup. He called the Alchemists too and convinced them to share some tech.â⬠There were so many crazy things about what heââ¬â¢d just said, I didnââ¬â¢t know where to begin parsing it. All sorts of wheeling and dealing had gone on without me realizing it. And even when it had been settled, no one had told me about it. Plus, the Alchemists had been involved? Helping the guardians to track me? ââ¬Å"The earrings,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s where they came from. The tracker must be in one of them. I never would have guessed.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not surprised, knowing the way you guys work.â⬠The rest of tonightââ¬â¢s reality began to sink in. The last of my fear subsided ââ¬â only to be replaced by anger. ââ¬Å"You lied to me! All of you! You should have told me what you were doing ââ¬â that you were tracking me and planning a raid! How could you keep that from me?â⬠He sighed. ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t want to, believe me. I told them over and over they needed to get you in the loop. But everyone was afraid youââ¬â¢d refuse to take the device if you knew about it. Or that youââ¬â¢d somehow slip up and give away the plan to those nuts. I didnââ¬â¢t believe that, though.â⬠ââ¬Å"And yet, you didnââ¬â¢t bother telling me yourself,â⬠I snapped, still outraged. ââ¬Å"I couldnââ¬â¢t! They made me promise not to.â⬠Somehow, his betrayal hurt worse than all the others. I had come to trust him implicitly. How could he do this to me? ââ¬Å"No one believed Iââ¬â¢d be able to talk the Warriors down, so everyone just made contingency plans without me.â⬠Never mind that I hadnââ¬â¢t been able to talk them down. ââ¬Å"Someone should have told me. You should have told me.â⬠There was legitimate pain and regret in his voice. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m telling you, I wanted to. But I was trapped. You of all people should know what itââ¬â¢s like being caught between groups, Sage. Besides, donââ¬â¢t you remember what I said just before you got in the car with Trey?â⬠I did, actually. Almost word for word. No matter what happens, I want you to know that I never doubted what youââ¬â¢re going to do. Itââ¬â¢s smart, and itââ¬â¢s brave. I slouched further into my seat and felt like I was on the verge of tears. Adrian was right. I did know what it was like to have your loyalty stretched between different groups. I understood the position heââ¬â¢d been in. It was just, some selfish part of me wished that Iââ¬â¢d been the one his loyalty had been strongest to. He tried, an inner voice said. He tried to tell you. The meeting spot that Dimitri had told Adrian to go to turned out to be Clarenceââ¬â¢s house. The place was crawling with guardians, some of whom were patching up each otherââ¬â¢s injuries. No one had been killed on either side, something the guardians had been very cautious about. The Warriors of Light already thought vampires were twisted and corrupt. They didnââ¬â¢t need more fuel added to the fire. Not that tonightââ¬â¢s raid was probably going to help matters. I had no clue how the Warriors would react or if there might be some lethal retaliation in store. I supposed the guardians and Alchemists had taken that into consideration. I wondered bitterly if any of them would share their opinions on it with me. ââ¬Å"I know better than to offer to heal you,â⬠Adrian told me, as we squeezed past a group of guardians. ââ¬Å"Grab a seat in the living room, and Iââ¬â¢ll get you some ice.â⬠I started to say I could get my own, but my ankle was growing increasingly painful. With a nod, I left him and made my way to the living room. A couple of unknown guardians were there, along with a beaming Clarence. To my surprise, Eddie and Angeline were also in there, sitting side by side ââ¬â and holding hands? ââ¬Å"Sydney!â⬠he exclaimed. He immediately released Angelineââ¬â¢s hand and hurried over to me, astonishing me with a hug. ââ¬Å"Thank God youââ¬â¢re okay. I hated having to leave you there. That wasnââ¬â¢t part of the plan. I was supposed to have gotten you out with Sonya.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, well, maybe next time, someone can fill me in on the plan,â⬠I said pointedly. Eddie grimaced. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry about that. I really am. We justâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"I know, I know. Didnââ¬â¢t think Iââ¬â¢d go along with it, were afraid something would go wrong, etc., etc.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry.â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t entirely forgive him, but I was too tired to push the matter much further. ââ¬Å"Just tell me this,â⬠I said, lowering my voice. ââ¬Å"Were you just holding hands with Angeline?â⬠He blushed, which seemed ludicrous after the fierceness Iââ¬â¢d seen him pull off back at the compound. ââ¬Å"Er, yeah. We were justâ⬠¦ talking. I mean, that isâ⬠¦ I think we might go out sometime. Not at school, of course, since everyone thinks weââ¬â¢re related. And probably not anything serious. I mean, sheââ¬â¢s still a little out there, but sheââ¬â¢s not as bad as I used to think. And she was really great in that battle. I feel like maybe I should get my head out of the fantasy with Jill and try some normal dating. If youââ¬â¢ll let me borrow your car.â⬠I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. ââ¬Å"Sure,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Far be it for me to stop a budding romance.â⬠Should I tell him Jill might not be such a fantasy after all? I didnââ¬â¢t want to meddle. Eddie deserved to be happy, but I couldnââ¬â¢t help but feel a little bad that Iââ¬â¢d told Jill he might be interested. I hope I hadnââ¬â¢t made things more complicated. Adrian returned with a bag of ice. I sat down in an armchair, and he helped position the ice on my ankle after I propped it up on a footstool. I relaxed as the ice began numbing the pain and hoped I hadnââ¬â¢t broken anything. ââ¬Å"Isnââ¬â¢t this exciting?â⬠Clarence asked me. ââ¬Å"Finally, you were able to see the vampire hunters for yourselves!â⬠I wasnââ¬â¢t sure Iââ¬â¢d describe the night with that much enthusiasm, but I did have to concede a point to him. ââ¬Å"You were right,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry for not believing you sooner.â⬠He gave me a kind smile. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s all right, my dear. I probably wouldnââ¬â¢t have believed a crazy old man either.â⬠I smiled in return and then thought of something from earlier. ââ¬Å"Mr. Donahueâ⬠¦ you said when you encountered the hunters before that a human named Marcus Finch intervened on your behalf.â⬠Clarence nodded eagerly. ââ¬Å"Yes, yes. Nice young man, that Marcus. Certainly hope I run into him again someday.â⬠ââ¬Å"Was he an Alchemist?â⬠I asked. Seeing Clarenceââ¬â¢s puzzled look, I tapped my cheek. ââ¬Å"Did he have a tattoo like mine?â⬠ââ¬Å"Like yours? No, no. It was different. Hard to explain.â⬠I leaned forward. ââ¬Å"But he did have a tattoo on his cheek?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. Didnââ¬â¢t you see in the picture?â⬠ââ¬Å"What picture?â⬠Clarenceââ¬â¢s gaze turned inward. ââ¬Å"I couldââ¬â¢ve sworn I showed you some of my old pictures, back when Lee and Tamara were youngâ⬠¦ ah, such good days those were.â⬠I worked hard to stay patient. Clarenceââ¬â¢s moments of coherence were sometimes hard to get a hold of. ââ¬Å"And Marcus? You have a picture of him too?â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course. A lovely one of the two of us. Iââ¬â¢ll find it one day and show you.â⬠I wanted to ask him if heââ¬â¢d show it to me now, but with his place so crowded, it didnââ¬â¢t seem like the right time. Dimitri arrived shortly thereafter, along with the last of the guardians whoââ¬â¢d been at the compound. Dimitri immediately asked about Sonya, who Iââ¬â¢d learned was resting in her bedroom. Adrian had offered to heal her, but Sonya had had enough clarity of mind to refuse him, saying she simply wanted blood and rest and a chance for the drugs to wear off naturally. Once Dimitri got this report and could rest easy about Sonya, he came straight to me, looking down from his lofty height at where I sat with my ice. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"I know you must have heard by now what happened.â⬠ââ¬Å"That I was sent into a dangerous situation with only half the information I needed?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"Yeah, I heard all about that.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not a fan of lies and half truths,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"I wished thereââ¬â¢d been another way. We had so little time, and this just seemed like the best option. No one doubted your ability to reason and make a compelling case. It was the Warriorsââ¬â¢ ability to listen and see reason that we didnââ¬â¢t believe in.â⬠ââ¬Å"I can see why you guys didnââ¬â¢t trust me with the plan.â⬠Near me, I saw Adrian flinch at the way I said ââ¬Å"you guys.â⬠I hadnââ¬â¢t intentionally meant anything by it but realized now that it sounded very condescending and Alchemist ââ¬â so Us versus Them. ââ¬Å"But I still canââ¬â¢t believe the Alchemists went along with that ââ¬â that they condoned keeping me out of the loop.â⬠There were no free chairs left, so Dimitri simply sat down cross-legged. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s not much I can tell you about that. Like I said, it was all short notice, and when I spoke with Donna Stanton, she felt it would be safer all around if you didnââ¬â¢t know what was coming. If it makes you feel better, she was very adamant about us keeping you safe once we were there.â⬠ââ¬Å"Maybe,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢d be better still if sheââ¬â¢d thought about how I might feel when I found out I wasnââ¬â¢t trusted with vital information.â⬠ââ¬Å"She did think about it,â⬠said Dimitri, looking slightly uncomfortable. ââ¬Å"She said you wouldnââ¬â¢t mind because you understand the importance of not questioning your superiorsââ¬â¢ decisions and that you know what they do is for the best. She said youââ¬â¢re an exemplary Alchemist.â⬠Donââ¬â¢t question. They know whatââ¬â¢s best. We canââ¬â¢t take any chances. ââ¬Å"Of course she did,â⬠I said. I never question anything. Manchester Airport Essay Example
Manchester Airport Essay The purpose of this report is to detail the key external environment issues surrounding Manchester Airport and how the Marketing Manger and the Operations Manager can attempt to influence or control these. The external environment is considered to be a far environment, therefore can neither be controlled nor influenced. This environment consists of Social, Legal, Technological, Economical and Political factors. For Manchester Airport these are: 1. Social ââ¬â Demographics, Seasons, environmental issues. 2. Legal ââ¬â Legislations. 3. Economic ââ¬â Boom/bust cycle, interest rates, taxation and Government expenditure. . Political ââ¬â The Government and legislation. 5. Technological ââ¬â Information technology. Fig 1, Current environmental issues Social: The social factors include population factors of age, occupation, lifestyle and wealth distribution. These can all have major impacts on businesses. Age population can determine whether people will travel close to home or further away, as younger people have families, which means there is a budget attached to their spending. Older people tend not to have a young family to cater for and have a larger disposable income. Occupation determines a personââ¬â¢s lifestyle through their earnings and thus their wealth distribution. Seasons affect the travel industry as most people prefer to travel in the summer for the warmth; therefore it is seen as a peak period for Manchester Airport. Environment issues arise as the Airport wishes to be seen as caring for the local area to boost popularity. Therefore concern over pollution must be regarded as a priority. Legal: Legal factors for the Airport include legislations on security, noise, air pollution and waste management by the Government and EU Directives. This does has implications on operations through the cost involved. For example, the EU Directive on the maximum weekly working hour of 48 hours per employee and waste management, resulting in overall performance being influenced. Economic: The Economic factors of the boom/bust cycle are the affects of the 8 year cycle of national economies going into recession. This means production shrinks, so jobs are lost and people have less disposable income to spend. Interest rates rising tend to reduce demand as mortgage and credit charges rise. Expenditure increases (or reductions in taxation) result in more money for the economy and rise in demand. Political: Politically the Airport needs to respond to the prevailing political climate and adjust the marketing policy accordingly. EU laws are hard to influence or control, but Politicians can be influenced by lobbying over their laws. Security laws must be followed to ensure the safety of customers. This does bring high expenditure as stated in Flying to the Future, B202 DVD. Technological: Technologically Information Technology is vital to the smooth running and communications of the Airport at all levels. The system needs to function well, be reliable and staff need to be fully trained in this, which brings more cost. Fig 2, Micro- and Macro-environmental forces diagram, Essentials of Marketing, Third Edition by Jim Blythe. The macro-environment issues can have a huge impact on the company and its micro-environment and it tends to be difficult to influence. This is why the Airports policy should be seen as operating within a rapidly changing environment and must monitor and react to any changes to ensure goals are met. Marketing managers should be reactive to macro-environment factors. To do this effectively they need to analyse where they are by using a SLEPT situational analysis to examine the strengths and weaknesses of the Airport and opportunities and threats from the external environment. Once this has been established they need to analyse the firmââ¬â¢s position within the environment and itself with a SWOT situational analysis. Social: Demography lifestyle analysis affects the way customers are targeted, so being aware of current patterns helps the Airport to target the right people. For example, shifts in the birth rate cause distortions in the market thus allowing opportunities to target sales to a specific age group. Seasons affect when people whish to holiday and therefore create peak and off peak periods. This allows marketing to adjust fares etc accordingly and market more effectively. Being environmentally active and aware brings good publicity as a caring company, which is what Manchester Airport wants. The Company value as stated in the internet site is ââ¬Å"Social Commitment ââ¬â we are a responsible neighbour and invest in our community. â⬠The Airports Environment Plan states that ââ¬Å"it is important that this growth takes place In tandem with a stringent framework dealing with controls on environmental impactsâ⬠. Technological: The internet is an opportunity for advertising and direct marketing. Manchester Airportââ¬â¢s internet site uses this advantage to its full potential by including all relevant information for passengers to view. The main computer system used by the Airport for security checking of staff and passengers and all communications is working well, reliable and staff are fully trained internally by Manchester Airport Ventures, who run the training centre. Ventures now also train outside bodies which generate more capital for the Airport. The Company value, from the internet site, states that ââ¬Å"Integrity we strive to be better every day and take steps to make it happen. Costs ââ¬â we spend money on the things that really matter. â⬠Legal: The Airport is required by law to protect its customers, the airlines. It chooses to protect the passengers for the airlines. This ensures the safety of everyone on site and thus a good working relationship between all parties. Environment laws bring cost. But this is required by the Government and also brings good publicity, as the Airport is seen to be actively caring for the environment and local area. Economic: The boom/bust cycle occurs approximately every 8 years, in which national economies have a recession. This brings production numbers to recede, loss of jobs and purchases are then reduced. Increased expenditure, or reduced taxation would mean more money in the economy and people will want and need travel and holidays. Taxation increase or expenditure cuts would bring less money and a loss in demand. It is essential to anticipate this management of demand in the economy. Political: Government policies cause shifts in emphasis and can disrupt the Airport operations. Being aware how to adapt the Airport policies to include these is essential to ensure continued running of all areas within the Airport. Government legislations can be influenced by lobbying. EU laws are difficult to control and influence. All of the above external factors will also impact on the operations of the Airport. The political and social environment has effect on operations through standards of welfare, health and safety at work. Operations Managers will need to ensure changes required are planned and controlled so the output conforms to requirements. A strategic plan for structural decisions, long, medium and short, can then be devised. The dynamic state of operations and the environment make it essential that there is feedback on progress. This enables changes to be made so the operation can work appropriately. This is control. The process of operations strategy looks at how operations policies, plans and principles are decided and developed. The overall objective for this will be: 1. Quality. This is key to improving performance against objectives. Manchester Airport achieves this through having a skilled workforce, technology and excellent communications. 2. Speed. The Airport has to ensure time is taken into account, as there are many people travelling through areas at one time. There are fire regulations on the number of people allowed in one area to consider. And, as stated in the DVD, Flying to the Future, if an area is overcrowded, passengers will become uncomfortable and stop spending in the retail outlets. 3. Dependability. This is how the Airport keeps its promises to its customers. So ensuring all systems are functioning well to keep all operations running on time is essential to enable passengers to move through the building. 4. Flexibility. Being flexible to seasons in the year enables the Airport to change the balance of the range of services to meet the needs of the Airport on a whole. This then ensure a cost effective operation is running smoothly. 5. Cost. This ensures finances are being used within budgets and appropriately. This can be achieved by reduced overheads, multi purpose equipment and facilities. Four variables are important to ensure the way the Airport operates. These key environmental factors are volume, variation, variety and customer contact. The operations should be designed so that it matches these features of its environment closely. Volume: The Airport has a high volume in the way that it has to repeatedly deliver its service. The use of technology by the Airport results in high output from an efficient process. Variation: Manchester Airport provides the correct level of capacity to meet the pattern of volume demands. Variety: The ability to be flexible is essential. The Airport has proved this since changing the way security is organised within the Airport Terminals. This high variety does need a lot of planning and control, which bring more overhead costs. Customer contact: The Airport has taken the service option of Front Office and Back Office. This ensures effective and efficient gains of planning and control. The above four factors will enable effective and efficient running of operations by determining how complex the task of managing the operation is. Once the above has been undertaken, the Systems Approach should be used to analyse operations. This will enable the Operations Manager to envisage the impact any operational changes will have on other areas linked. Three key ideas are involved in the systems approach, which are: 1. Environmental influences; it is important to identify the processes of the operation and design these in the most effective manner. 2. Control; information is gathered and compared with the Airport standard. This enables Management to proactively manage operations ensuring all predetermined standards are met. 3. Structure decisions; the hard system method should be followed here, as most problems surrounding operations within the Airport will have agreement from all, as there are guidelines to follow in this business. Fig , Operations Management in Context, by Galloway, Rowbotham and Azhashemi. All the above information on the effects of environmental issues in the Marketing and Operations areas and how to address them, have been detailed. Management should now be able to effectively incorporate the above into day to day work and filter it through to team members. Business graduate skills outcome. Example of how Block 1 case studies have contributed to my skills development. Self-assessment of current level of skill ââ¬â high/medium/low; any actions to be taken. Learn from non-text as well as text-based materials enhancing your general study skills. 1. The text books and block books were very good to work with. 2. Case studies helped me to have a better understanding of how a subject worked. 3. I absorbed information from the DVD/CD after watching it repeatedly. 1. I enjoyed working with the text books, but I am still finding it hard to get into the study mode. It is maybe my age, but entering back into the world of business learning is proving harder than I anticipated. 2. Low. I need to create more time to learn the art of skim reading before re- reading chapters. 3. Medium. The need to take better notes to safe time must be learnt. I did not enjoy the Listening to the CD, I found it hard to take information in that way. I must re read the study skills information. Demonstrate thinking skills (holistic, integrative, critical) and show deeper understanding of some technically detailed topics. . My note taking initially took up too much time as I was writing down every item from pages I thought was important. 2. The block information as a whole has been a good starter for me entering into the first term of my degree. It has been hard, but eventually the information is starting to be understood by myself and applied. 3. I have found that I am no w using items learnt through this block in my working life at the Council. 1. Medium. I now highlight text in the book and make small notes at the side. I find this has sped the learning process up for me, which helps with the time limit. I still need to make time to re ââ¬â read chapters after the first read. 2. Low. I still need to find more time to just sit and read all the information and let it sink in. I shall also try and give myself longer to complete self assessments and case studies. 3. Low ââ¬â Medium. I am not using it as often as I would like. This is down to confidence issues, as I do not want to enter into a conversation/debate that I still do not fully understand. Use examples and analyse case studies to enhance understanding, support conclusions and illustrate issues concerning business functions in organisational contexts. I have found the B202 beginning difficult, but with the use of case studies and examples it has made the work easier to do. This is because it helps to explain the subjects to you through examples etc. Low. I need to study for more than 15 hours a week, as I am needing more time for information to sink in. This is until I find my feet with the course and find the balance between family, work and study. Bibliography.
